Implants are becoming standard of care for edentulous, long span and single unit missing teeth. Single unit implants with adjacent teeth pose a different problem in regards to restorative aspect of the implant. Implants will have bone loss so how the crown is designed will determine if a food trap is created or not. Often teeth adjacent to implants will have to be endodontically treated due to effects of this food trap, created and worsen by localized bone loss surrounding the implant. Leaving diastema and allowing Patient to clean the area sometimes are the best option.
